Preparing the AAM Workforce: Pilot Type Ratings, Avionics Technicians and University Programmes Take Shape

Workforce development is emerging as the quiet bottleneck of advanced air mobility. In the United States, the FAA's eight AAM integration pilot projects deliberately include operational and pilot-training elements, and the agency has stated that the data they generate will inform future training requirements and standards. The FAA and EASA are both developing eVTOL pilot type-rating requirements — a brand-new licence category that will define how the first generation of air-taxi pilots is trained, checked and recertified.

Academic institutions are moving in parallel. Utah Valley University has built a BS in Aerospace Technology Management designed for A&P-certified technicians, with coursework spanning Urban Air Mobility & Autonomous UAS research topics, aerospace vehicle certification and reliability maintenance systems — content beyond the scope of current Part 147 curricula. In the Gulf, Etihad Aviation Training has partnered with Archer Aviation to develop pilot training programmes, and industry bodies emphasize that eVTOL maintenance demands a hybrid skill set: traditional airframe-and-powerplant credentials plus avionics, high-voltage electrical systems and battery-safety expertise. Manufacturer-education apprenticeships, R&D centres on campus and government-backed curriculum standardization are the three collaboration models being used worldwide.
